Ch. 14 and Opening the Gate Questions

Ch.14 Questions
1. What are the advantages and challenges of representing a story with one image as opposed to multiple images?
-One of the challenges of representing a story with one image as opposed to multiple images is there is no explanation for the content of the image and there may be knowledge required from the viewer to understand it that they may not have. This means the viewer can't fully appreciate the image because they don't know exactly what's happening or if there are people they might not know who they are.  An advantage of only having one image is that if you are able to succeed in representing an action and the emotion caused by it, such as Jacques-Louis David, then the image will be truly beautiful.
2. What is causality?
-A causality is a chain of events in a story. It is almost a domino effect, where one event causes another event and then another event until the conclusion.
3. Define narrative compression and give an example of a television or online commercial that uses narrative compression.
-Narrative compression is when an idea needs to be compressed into a short time frame and still capture the attention of the viewer and give it's information, like advertisements. This example linked below is a Wendy's ad for their new 4 for $4 meal. In just 16 seconds, they show all of the food with close ups of them cooking and being prepared to really get the attention of the viewer. And they keep repeating the 4 for $4 to make you think, "Hey that's a great deal." sec) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCmQwkfePWs
4.What are the six strategies advertisers use in advertisements to sell us stuff? Provide examples of commercials that you have recently viewed that illustrate each of these strategies.
-The six strategies advertisers use in advertisements are Rational, Emotional, Serious, Humorous, Realistic, and Exaggerated.
Rational ads give a lot of specific information and can give a demonstration.
-This verizon commercial is very informative and uses colored balls to       demonstrate what they're talking about.

Emotional ads focus on getting an emotional reaction out of the viewer.
-This is a commercial for a....car. And they used a cute dog to make the viewer cry even though it's just for a Chevy car! It made me cry.

Serious ads take a literal serious approach to displaying their message by showing serious images that can sometimes be too much.
-I see these smoking commercials all the time. They show the really awful effects that smoking has on the body and really make you feel scared to smoke.

Humorous ads (thank goodness those last two strategies were awful) are intended to make the viewer laugh and be able to memorable without being offensive.
-These Allstate "Mayhem" commercials have always been pretty funny.

Realistic ads are aimed to make the viewer feel connected to whats being presented in the advertisement.
-Tylenol uses many different stories and actors in this commercial that really connect to many different people. They main focus is family and love.

Exaggerated ads are used when the product isn't really that interesting on its own. So they use ideas that they know will be remembered.
-I immediately thought of this Extra gum commercial. (This one makes me cry but in a good way.)

Opening the Gate Questions
At the end of the John Berger essay, he writes about how the structure of 24 fps allows us to “catch sight of another visible order.” Describe and then analyze three events or scenes from the videos/films that you screened in class where the medium caused the ordinarily invisible to become visible.
